Instructions for Setting Up your Mac to Process Urdu

A. "UrduQWERTYkeyboardMac.pdf" is a compact one-page keyboard
map. Print a copy for reference, and save this file on the
Desktop or in some folder where you can find it easily.

B. Keyboard Layout Installation

   1. Before Installation: If the folder "/Library/Keyboard
Layouts" contains any files named "UrduPhonetic.keylayout",
"UrduPhonetic.icns", "UrduQWERTY.keylayout", or
"UrduQWERTY.icns", then delete them. (These have now become
obsolete.)
   2. Copy the file "UrduQWERTY.bundle" to the folder
"/Library/Keyboard Layouts". If you have already installed a
previous version of Urdu-QWERTY keyboard layout, then confirm
that you want it overwritten.
   3. Log out, then log in again. This will let the system
install the Urdu keyboard.

C. Activating Urdu Input (Mac OS 10.9 and above)

(For previous versions of Mac OS, go to Section D below.)

C1. Making Urdu a "preferred language"

   1. Pull down the Apple Menu in the menu bar (the apple icon
on the top left of the screen) and select "System Preferences".
   2. Click on "Language & Region".
   3. In the window that opens, the left pane entitled
"Preferred Lamnguages" lists the languages available for document
editing. If Urdu is not listed, then click on the '+' sign at the
bottom to show the languages to add. Scroll through the list to
find "Urdu", select it, then click on the "Add" button at the
bottom.
   4. Now you will be given the option to make Urdu your "primary
language", that is, to have your user interface (such as menus
and dialogs) in Urdu. Most likely this is not what you want, so
just click on the "Use English" button.
   5. In some Mac OS versions another window will now appear
prompting you to "Select input sources to add". In this case,
select "Urdu - QWERTY" and then click on the "Add" button. Also
in this case, you don't have to do the steps in
"Activating the Urdu QWERTY keyboard layout" seubsection below.
   6. Close the System Preferences window.

   7. Tick off the "Show Input menu in menu bar" box at the
